The club looked like it always did. People having fun, loving one another in the way they each needed. Everyone was enjoying themselves, even the sub—flipped over her Daddy’s knee, getting her butt paddled with a hairbrush—was exactly where she wanted to be.

Constance looked down at the piece of iron she held in her hand. It was the brand, the exact design he’d showed her a few shorts days ago. She’d honestly thought he would change his mind before tonight rolled around, but judging by the way the stage was lit, with all the necessary things lined up, he wasn’t backing out.

“Are you ready for this?” Kennedy asked as she joined her.

“I don’t know.” Constance shook her head. “Three days ago, I hardly knew what branding was, let alone cold branding.”

“It’s supposed to hurt less.”

“I know, I just...” She looked at the woman who had topped her so many times. “He’s doing this to prove to me how devoted he is to us. He shouldn’t have to prove that.”

“You’re right, he shouldn’t, but I know a stubborn sub who couldn’t believe what he repeatedly told her.” Kennedy paused. “Do you honestly think proving to you he means what he says is the only reason he’s doing this? I mean, the man is covered in tattoos, so he clearly had no problem with needles.”

“But this is different,” she looked down at the brand. “He designed this, had the iron twisted into the design he wanted. Hell, he had this made before he even talked to me about it. This wasn’t some thrown-together thing. He put a lot of thought, time, and money into this.”

“Don’t forget research.” Pax’s arms wrapped around her from behind a second before he kissed her neck. “Everyone who will be on that stage tonight, except you, has done hours upon hours of research. None of us are going in blind.”

“All for ten seconds.”

“Three to five,” Pax corrected Kennedy with a smirk. “I can literally do anything for five seconds.”

“But you don’t have to do this.”

His arms tightened around her.

“Say that one more time, and I swear to God, I will make you regret it.” Pax turned her to look at him. “I’m not doing this to prove anything but because I want to. You see this?” He pointed to a tiny heart on his arm, hardly noticeable in one of the petals of a flower. “That’s for my mom’s. I got it the day after she died. And this,” he said, pointing to a clover that was worked into another petal. “That’s for my brother. When my dad passes, he’ll get one of his own.”

“So, we don’t have to die before being added to your body art?” Constance knew it was the wrong thing to say before she stopped talking. It was distasteful, but with the shit going on in their lives, it was downright cruel.

She didn’t get a chance to apologize or attempt to explain before she was pulled to the side of the room and pushed into the wall with her back against the unrelenting surface.
